Know Your Rights
Right to Remain Silent: If the police are asking you questions regarding a crime, your only response should be to simply tell the officer you would like to speak with an attorney. While this is highly important after being arrested, it is equally important to exercise this right at the earliest stages of any police investigation.
Right to an Attorney: You have the right to consult with an attorney at any time. You have the right to an attorney present during any questioning conducted by the police. You have the right to have an attorney represent you at court. The police and prosecutors are very skilled at their job, never make the mistake of going up against them alone, without a skilled criminal defense lawyer by your side.
Right to a Trial: A charge is not the same as a conviction. Just because you have been arrested, doesn't mean you have to plead guility or that you would be found guilty at trial. You are presumed innocent and the prosecutor must prove beyond a reasonable doubt each and every element of the crime(s) you are charged with. You have the right to a trial which you should almost always exercise of you are innocent of the crimes alleged. Sometime a trial is also recommended if the state lacks enough evidence to prove their case.
Right to Confront Witnesses: A defendant has the right to confront all witnesses testifying against them. This is the defendant's opportunity to cross examine witnesesses and to highlight the points in your favor and expose any flaws in the state's case.
